What is ultrasound imaging?
Ultrasound imaging uses high frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. Ultrasound is used to show the movement and structure of internal organs.
Ultrasound is used in the evaluation of:
Ultrasound exams are used to diagnose several conditions and help assess organ damage following an illness. Ultrasound is a useful way of examining most of the body's internal organs such as:
- Heart & Blood vessels
- Liver
- Spleen
- Gallbladder
- Kidneys
- Thyroid
- Scrotum
- Uterus & Ovaries
- Unborn Child
Ultrasound exams are also used to:
- Image the breast and guide biopsy
- Diagnose a variety of heart conditions and assess the damage of a heart attack
Patient Preparation
Preparation for your ultrasound study will depend upon the type of exam you are having:
- Ultrasound- Abdomen, Liver, Gallbladder, and Pancreas: DO NOT eat or drink anything after midnight hte night prior to your exam or after 6 hours prior to your study for an afternoon exam.
- Ultrasound- OB and Pelvic Area: Arrive with a full bladder. Finish drinking 1 quart of water 1 hour prior to your exam. Do not empty your bladder. If your bladder is not full, the exam may need to be delayed.
- Ultrasound- Hysterosonogram: This exam MUST be scheduled during day 4-6 of a new menstrual cycle.
- Ultrasound- Kidneys: Drink 2 glasses of water, 1 hour prior to your exam. Do not empty your bladder.
No preparation is necessary for an ultrasound of the thyroid, scrotum, hernia, blood vessels, or musculoskeletal disorders.iagnose a variety of heart conditions and assess the damage of a heart attack
